Berkhamsted conservation area garden
This narrow urban garden is a classic slice of Berkhamsted and indeed is typical of gardens in terraced streets. Previously the cramped raised patio was separate from the garden, which was not what the plant-loving client wanted. The new design is generously proportioned albeit within a narrow space. A spacious patio gives way onto a wide path.
The large patio doors look straight onto a beautiful porcelain patio, with a gravel paved area. The gravel path is deliberately made extra wide so that passage through the space is slow and deliberate, and planting can be enjoyed. The gravel area leads to a wider section of paving, enhancing the width of the garden. Soft and lush planting softens the patio and brings colour and scent right up to the eating area - whereas previously, planting strips were consigned to the sides and the back of the lawn.

A stepping stone path leads down to another planting zone and an apple tree at the end of the garden.
Paving across the garden provides areas for a barbecue to be sited, meaning that food preparation and smoke are done slightly away from the eating area. These hidden corners also provide a spot for a solitary perch in the morning sun.
