Large Garden Design
This generously sized plot had a small, awkward patio, with retaining walls close to the house and planting hidden from view. The different areas of the garden had nothing linking them and there was no obvious path out from the patio, or anything leading out to the garden. The client wanted a new garden design that would provide a journey from one part of the garden to the other, and link the zones to create one beautiful outside space.

The garden room and office was detached from the back door and the rest of the garden. A new path constructed of clay pavers provides an enjoyable walk surrounded by planting, with movement and softness on one side and a more formal lavender and yew border on the other side. The path also links the fire pit area and draws the eye towards the views over the countryside. Generous blocks of planting provide colour, scent and food for pollinators. Small trees were carefully placed to provide shade for the garden room. These trees also ground the larger oaks in the background, providing a mid -layer of planting.
The client was keen to have planting closer to the house, to ground and soften the building. Now, planting flanks the path as you arrive into the garden. A new woodland-style planting area at the side provides interest and beauty. The formal dining room has its own garden view, with a formal planting style to suit.
A water feature close to the eating area on the patio provides sound and movement in the garden, complimenting the planting.
This newly planted bed draws visitors out into the garden. A mix of bulbs, Geums, Achillea, Phlomis and Stipa provide a colour, movement and texture through the Spring and Summer, with Rosemary and Yew balls providing all-year-round form and structure.
