Small gardens can be cosy as well as beautiful. They have to work hard because often everything is visible all at once. Creating a sense of unity across all the different elements is probably the most important thing when designing a small space.

Tips and tricks for small garden design ideas
Draw the eye to the boundaries
Increase the sense of space by drawing the eye outwards, perhaps along the longest lines in the garden, such as a diagonal line. Features and planting on the periphery create focal points and interest. Avoid only having low planting that brings the eye down to the ground.
Blur the edges
A clothed boundary means the eye can’t discern the edges and so the smallness of the space is camouflaged. Choose plant heights carefully, if shrubs and trees are too big and bushy they will dominate, but too small and they won’t do the job.
Own it!
It’s an easy mistake to make to think that the garden will feel bigger, the more bare and empty it is. Make an asset of the small space, to add drama, enclosure and great design. Focus on the essentials in the space and maximise them to create a stylish garden with a welcome sense of enclosure.
The ground
I like to use large format tiles where possible to minimise joints and therefore increase the sense of space. Often in a small garden the lawn doesn’t actually provide much utility because it’s so small. That space can often be more effectively used for seating or planting, or water.
Other important factors to consider include furniture, colour and lighting, all of which play a part in making the small garden work.
